Dependent- adj. “unable to do without.” Dependency is not something I ever aspired to. Especially in the America, we place a high value on independence; in fact, our country was founded on it. We want to be self-sustaining and not reliant on anyone else to make it by. The shocking truth I have been confronted with lately is that independence is not a value of the kingdom of Heaven. Jesus was the most dependent person that ever lived. If that doesn’t sit right with you, you are not alone. However, the more I look at his life the more I realize it is true. He never did anything in his own strength but rather relied on his Father for everything. I have had my fair share of challenges since arriving in South Africa one month ago today. Often I find myself overwhelmed by my studies, adjusting to the rigorous schedule, and missing home. Being stripped of my independence and realizing I cannot do it alone hasn't been an easy pill to swallow. Slowly but surely, God is teaching me to use these instances as opportunities to turn my attention back toward him. There is such a profound difference between doing things in my own strength and abiding in Jesus. It’s like trending through molasses verses running freely without constraint. This week when the pressures of life begin to weigh heavy on you, just remember that you were never meant to carry them alone. Simply look to Jesus and he will give you the strength you need. Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me"
